The circular economy strategies feature in the updated chapter on circular business models in the 2nd edition of Catherine’s Circular Economy Handbook. Catherine built on the work of leading thinkers including Walter R. Stahel, William McDonough and Michael Braungart, Nancy Bocken and team, Martin Geissdoerfer and team, John Mulrow and Victoria Santos, to summarise three key circular strategies, underpinned by a fourth strategy: resource efficiency.
  • Slow the flow – use the product and materials for a longer period of time (eg design for durability and repair) thus getting more life from the materials and reducing consumption.
  • Intensify the loop – enabling more users to access products/resources, so we get more from less. This helps improve resource utilisation and reduce idle time, eg through sharing, renting, pay-per-use, reuse and subscriptions.
  • Recover and regenerate – we need to ‘close the loop’, by recovering products, components and materials and regenerating new resources to use in the next batch of products.
  • Narrow the loop – reduce material, energy, water and any other resources used, at a system level. This means using fewer and simpler materials

In the summary spreadsheet, we’ve  included the location of the person/organisation’s base and the industry sector related to their work. There’s also a link to the episode page on our website, which has a player, shownotes, links we mention and a transcript.
